Evaluation
Before I started to create my front cover I researched other
college magazines to get ideas on what mine should look like. I also saw other
people’s coursework and their feedback and so used their comments to improve my
overall magazine look.
In my magazine front cover, I have used typical conventions of a magazine you would find on a real print product such as a masthead, barcode, left third, main image and model credit. This helps make the magazine seem more genuine.
In the main image I have used a student from the college. Her folders match the colour theme I have used throughout the cover and the pink could be used to show how she feels about the college and the fact that she is smiling does too. The folders show she is enthusiastic about her studies at the college and the bag on her shoulder shows she’s eager to learn. The image portrayed shows the college is a happy place to learn. The colours of the main image are brighter and have a higher contrast than the image used as the background. This helps draw the reader to the magazine. The background image is of the college and the name of the college is clear on the front of the magazine above the person’s head which shows that that’s the place she is happy to be learning in.
The main story line is a pull quote from the magazine article. It links to the main image. ‘I love my new subjects’ suggests that the student is enjoying her time at her new college and makes the reader want to find out why she feels that way.
The left third of the cover includes the cover stories you will find in the magazine. They are placed here because it follows the conventions of a typical magazine allowing the reader to see the stories when the magazines are stacked together on display. The colours used matches the colour scheme used at the college itself and the font matches the logo on the front of the college. The black banner used to mount the masthead of the front cover contrasts with the white background, making it stand out and eye-catching to the reader. Black and white also shows sophistication. The masthead itself, ‘Student Scoop’, uses alliteration to make the name memorable.
By putting a Facebook page and Twitter address, it reminds the students that there are other ways to access information about the college. It also shows that the college is up to date with social networking and the other students who use them.
One thing I would change about my magazine would be to make the subjects on the folders in the main image more understandable so that students were able to see the different subjects that are available to study at the college.
If I could make this magazine again, I would use another person on the front of my magazine to show the reader that not only is the college a friendly place to be in, but it is also a place where you can meet new people and make new friends. I would also have the people on the cover taking part in some sort of sport to show that the college is athletic. I could also have put about its recent achievements in sport because it is one of the best sporting colleges in the area.

Overall, I am pleased with my final product and feel it connects with not only the students in the college, but the staff and teachers as well and allows them to access information about the college itself.
